French Women's Taste in Clothing and Accessories

-->
Style and Wardrobe Secrets of chic French Women

As paragons of style, glamorous Parisian French women embrace their individuality and have a real ‘savoir-faire,’ always liking to wear something that puts a stamp of individuality on themselves. They generally like to pick an outfit that will make them stand out from everyone else and they don't like to follow trends (or even care for that matter, what the latest Hollywood celebrities are wearing.) Where’s the originality in that? And, that kind of conformity is frowned upon!

The Parisienne has an almost matchless way (that virtually surpasses imitation) of putting all of her clothing and accessories together. This also applies to the way she ties her scarf - ‘just so.’ Also, a French woman embraces her femininity and is always feminine - so at work she avoids like the plague wearing anything resembling those American-style genderless business suits. She also prefers aesthetics over comfort.

Even though the French woman may dress more conservatively than
women from other countries do,she has a lot of fun with fashion
and never skimps on details! Now, let’s take a closer look at the
style and wardrobe secrets of chic French women – and what the
French women actually choose to wear….

What French women wear… a French woman likes to choose her wardrobe
based on reputable labels that will last at least 5-15 years. This will consist
of basic, yet expensive ‘investment’ pieces, such as;

A few little black dresses (these will take her from morning to night)

A couple of pencil skirts

Some lovely blouses

A couple of pairs of slim and dressy pants

Some nice lined jackets for each season

A trench coat or two

Some tailored pants suits

Some really good jeans

*Tip for the 'French look;' buy a few great pieces and accessorize around them.

A French woman will match and dress up these basic wardrobe pieces with different accessories to ‘fancy
them up’ a bit and that express her own personality (she doesn’t want to look like anyone but herself.)

Some gorgeous pairs of shoes and some smart looking boots

A pair of Dior or Gucci sunglasses

A nice watch

Some quality costume, as well as fine jewelry

An alligator skin bag

An antique shawl

**Some scarves (worn with everything and in all widths, lengths,
colors and designs – and tied, twisted and knotted in a myriad of
different ways!)

A designer Hermès scarf

A beautiful pair of pantyhose/stockings

A pair of kid-skin gloves

A trendy brooch (brooches are very appealing and versatile. You can wear them almost anywhere on the body.)

A gorgeous rope of pearls or some other stand-out piece of jewelry/accessory.

A panama hat

What fashions are avoided on the streets and in public places
by Parisian women;

Baggy sweats

Baggy t-shirts

Sneakers (especially those bulky white ones) and flip flops

Workout clothes

‘Crazy’ clothing

Poor quality clothing

French Color;

Even though the French are naturally graced with style and fashion
sense, they like to keep their color simple and neutral. Unlike
American and British women, the French avoid mixing too many colors
at once (not chic,) and which is considered to be very distracting.

The actual cut of a piece of clothing is more important to them
than the color. Black is a popular basic choice, as well as white,
beige, brown,burgundy, grey and navy. Brighter and more vibrant
primary colors, as well as pastels, are often added through the use
of colorful accessories - such as scarves, belts and jewelry.

*Tip; have a color consultation to find out what color ‘season’ you are (depending on your skin, hair and eye color.) You’ll either be a spring, summer, autumn or winter. This will also help to determine what neutral colors suit you the most.

French footwear;

Chic, vogue and oh-so-feminine French women love wearing high
heeled shoes and boots, as much as possible. And, the higher the
heel, the better! They virtually walk everywhere in high heel
shoes - or elegant flats/tailored leather lace up shoes. You do
not see Parisian women walking the streets in flip-flops or
running shoes! (“We’re European, our priority is not being
comfortable.”) If you do happen to see a French woman in
sneakers, they’ll be the highly fashionable and trendy looking kind.

For lounging about at home, a French woman will wear something stylish
– such as a pretty pair of ballet flats or padded mules. She’ll also
take a long time in selecting the perfect quality footwear (that she’ll
get a lot of mileage out of.) Beautiful shoes (by a brand such as Prada)
are often the most essential additions to her wardrobe.

French Handbags;

A French ladies purse or handbag will be of quality leather for the
lower ticket brands – in a basic neutral color. Louis Vuitton and
Gucci are popular brands for beautiful designer purses and handbags.

French Lingerie;

French women are in a real habit of buying alluring and ‘très sexy’ lingerie. Even though they don’t make a lot of money in France, they actually spend more than 20 per cent of their annual clothing budget on lingerie! They adore good sets of matching, well-fitted bras and panties, stockings and garter belts, as well as silky ‘mou mous,’ pretty chiffon nightgowns etc.

And, they don't just save wearing lingerie for special and intimate occasions, “non, every day is the right day to emphasize their femininity and feel seductive. For the most exquisite ‘come-hither’ French lingerie, try French lingerie brands such as; la Perla, la Senza or Agent Provocateur.

French Jewelry;

A French woman’s jewelry will be either fine and understated in appearance - or very bold. They’ll usually choose the bolder types of jewelry to balance out a very basic outfit. If they’re feeling adventurous, sometimes they’ll even go with the ‘gypsy look’ - of lots of bangles; bracelets and rings. And, BIG earrings!

Shawls and brooches tend to be aging, and men do not care if a woman is wearing gucci or hermes. This is probably why you never hear men going wild over French women...they have style in the eyes of the rich and designers (who are usually gay, not exactly good judges of female appeal) but aren't that appealing to men around the world.

The women that are very stylish in France tend to be too thin too. All these different things combined are not sensual or delightful to men, who like curves, femininity, etc.

(The diet books about French women always baffled me...they eat so little! When I was in Paris, the servings were so small. There is no big secret to their thinness among those Parisians that are thin).

Your past posts about women from other cultures were more spot on...men find many women appealing, but the chicness of French women is not high on a man's list.

Thanks so much for your comments Penelope :-) and welcome back! As for this post, I certainly do realize that men prefer curvier women, and what they prefer in women generally...

I also know that men don't care about brands. But this post isn't about what men find most appealing in clothing and women, it's aimed at those women who want to emulate French women - or cultivate that continental look.

While men may not notice labels, they do notice confidence. When you feel like you are beautiful, it shows. Starting with gorgeous lingerie is a great base for feeling sexy and confident and there is lingerie available for every budget.
Speaking of budget, the idea of buying good quality, neutral colored, well fitted basics and accessorizing is a great way to stretch your budget.

I just want to add something, actually part of the overall allure of the French woman is her feminine feminism. I actually worked and was friends with a man from Paris, and got to know him well. I also studied french language and culture 8 years. The French are fiercly feminist--example, the French president doesn't want women to wear burkas. I think this point is important to add because you often talk about feminists not being feminine. I wanted to point out there is a such thing as feminine feminists (I consider myself one) who believe they deserve equality to men in the home and work etc... but also make themselves look very feminine. Many French women and men feel this way and that is part of the allure and freedom of the country--I was told this from my previous employer. France's symbol is a woman, it speaks for itself right there. Just wanted to add this information in, because your blogs about French women are a great example of how feminine women can be while still, like many french women, being feminists. Just thought it was an interesting point, but I respect your views.

Thanks!

Although I think that they are many classy, feminine women all over the world, I agree wholeheartedly that women should not be caught in public (or at home unless exercising or heavily cleaning for that matter) baggy clothes and sweats. It makes you look like you don't really like yourself and you don't care how you look. It terrible! Love your blog!

Hello !

I'm French and I LOVE your blog!!
I even sent a request to be accepted in your Facebook group.

The passage when you describe our way of dressing is very true.

Feminity is really important for me and it's everywhere all around : high heels, perfumes, make up... If you arrive at Paris airport, you'll see lots of adds for clothes, fragrances and shoes.

It's true that compared to the USA, the servings are small but here, eating is an art of life. Quality over quantity.

Thanks for your articles. :)
